Casual ease floating on the wall: Skate Block Girl by Susanne Kraisser
A girl sits on the edge of a square block that is open at the back, her legs dangling over the rim, her hands clasped in her lap, her gaze directed downwards. Is she watching what is happening in the room, or is she lost in thought? Her posture has something of the relaxed, slightly angular body language of skate and street culture, to which the work owes its name – unhurried, introspective, entirely at one with herself.
What is truly special about “Skate Block Girl” only becomes apparent in the room: the block on which the figure sits is not worked as a closed plinth but as an open, box-like niche – which allows the sculpture to be mounted directly on the wall. Instead of standing on a table or in a display case, the girl thus sits as if floating on a small silver ledge in the middle of the wall, watching what is happening in the room from there.
Worked from around 6.0 kg of fine silver, this piece combines sculptural storytelling with an unusual presentation concept that reaches into the room – a work that can not only be placed on a surface but staged as an independent wall object.
