A single silver band, sweepingly wound around itself and twisted, generates the entire dynamic of “Open Twister”: out of one continuous line arises a form that seems to turn in space, to open up and to return into itself. Precisely because it is a single, unbroken band, the sculpture has the effect of a frozen moment of pure movement – as though a curve had been halted mid-swing. Depending on the angle of view, the smoothly polished surfaces flowing into one another produce ever new silhouettes – at times like a knot opening up, at times like a vortex that has only just found its form. Maximilian Verhas is one of those sculptors who, with this kind of pared-down, flowing formal language, make the essence of movement itself tangible.

At 13.2 kg of pure fine silver, “Open Twister” is currently the heaviest and most material-intensive work in the entire gallery programme – a sculpture that never loses its kinetic lightness despite its enormous weight. Produced as a solid silver cast, the piece reaches a height of 29 cm and is limited to just 10 signed and numbered examples, which makes it one of the most exclusive editions at BullionArt.
