A Lattice of Light and Silver: Ulitospiral by Tomas Medek

Like a snail shell cut open, or a nautilus shell translated into silver, the “Ulitospiral” winds conically inwards: a filigree, rib-like lattice of fine struts that condense in a spiral around a central axis. The name refers directly to this motif from nature – the spiral form of the snail, interpreted here not as a closed mass but as an open, permeable structure through which light and space shine.

This complexity is made possible by Tomas Medek’s characteristic way of working: the model for the “Ulitospiral” was created on a 3D printer before a mould was taken from it in the entirely classical manner in order to cast the structure in pure fine silver. A work of this kind calls not only for a technically demanding, computer-aided design, but equally for the perfect craftsmanship of classical silver casting – two worlds that Medek brings together impressively in this piece.
