Tomas Medek
The Czech sculptor Tomas Medek was born in Brno (Brünn) in 1969. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in the sculpture class of Prof. Vladimir Pretzel. Since completing his master’s degree in 1996 he has worked as a freelance artist with international success.
Tomas Medek is concerned with the structures of objects, with their interior and their transparency. At the outset he worked with basic geometric forms such as the cube or the cuboid. From 2000 onwards he developed his Bio-Insight series: starting from simple organic figures such as a pumpkin, a pepper or a shell, he develops complex forms with a ribbed structure reminiscent of the spatial meshes of 3D computer graphics.
With the technological progress of 3D printers it was only a small step for Medek to realise his objects in this way as well. Since 2005 some of his works have come directly out of the 3D printer as unique pieces, while others are still made by hand.
The two works “Ulitospiral” and “Diatom”, which Tomas Medek conceived for BullionArt, come out of a 3D printer as models. A mould was then taken from them in the traditional way in order to cast them in fine silver. Realising these works of art calls not only for a spectacular design using the latest technologies, but also for perfect craftsmanship of the classic kind.
