No beginning, no end: Jana by Werner Pfändler
A slender body tapering towards the top carries a boat-shaped head with two round, dark recesses for eyes – reduced to a few clear surfaces, without any detail that might distract from the essentials. Werner Pfändler describes his group of works, the “Janas”, in his own words: “The Janas are the result of abstracting and reducing the female form to the minimum – the essence of form. The Janas owe their name to their formal closeness to Janus, the two-headed Roman god of beginnings and endings. The Janas, however, are neither beginning nor end, they simply always are. Always seen from the front, they never turn their back on you. They greet you when you arrive, they bid you farewell when you leave.”
It is precisely this idea of perpetual attentiveness that shapes the effect of the sculpture: where other figures have a front and a back, “Jana” remains approachable from every angle – a quiet, watchful presence that never turns away.
