Werner Pfändler

Sculptor Werner Pfändler smiling with his hand on a large curved sculpture, black-and-white photograph

“The Janas are the result of abstracting and reducing the female form to the minimum – the essence of form.
The Janas owe their name to their formal affinity with Janus, the two-headed Roman god of beginnings and endings.
The Janas, however, are neither beginning nor end; they simply are. Always seen from the front, they never turn their back on you. They greet you when you arrive and bid you farewell when you leave.”

BIOGRAPHY

Werner Pfändler, born on 25 April 1946 in Zürich, learned his craft at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich and then trained as a cameraman. He went on to work as a press photographer on assignments worldwide and was active in various fields of advertising and print media.
From the mid-1980s onwards, Werner Pfändler devoted himself increasingly to his passion as a painter and sculptor. In München, his adopted home, he found the inspiration he needed and developed his style, which is characterised by simplicity and reduction to the minimum. Whether painting, sculpture, objects or photography: reduction to the essential is the aim of his work.
