Two Silhouettes, One Moment: Der Kuss II by Pierre-Paul Maillé

Two abstract, tapering forms incline towards one another and touch at a single point – or are just about to. It is precisely in this narrow gap that the whole tension of “Der Kuss II” lies: one cannot say with certainty whether the two forms are already touching or whether the moment of contact is still to come. The contrasting patination – dark matt on one side, gleaming silver on the other – underlines this division and turns two abstract silhouettes almost into two characters approaching one another from different directions.

“Der Kuss II” is a reworked version of the now sold-out edition “Kuss”: the lines have become more pronounced, clearer and sharper in their transitions, while the tension-filled, contrasting patination of the original has been retained. Cast in 2021 in solid fine silver from around 3.9 kg of fine silver and 21.5 cm high, the work is limited to 18 signed and numbered examples – a further development of an already sought-after motif in the work of Pierre-Paul Maillé – dark matt and gleaming silver – has remained.
