Jana Pfeifer

Portrait of the sculptor Jana Pfeifer with short reddish-brown hair, smiling against a light background

Jana Pfeifer was born in 1946 in Reichenberg in the former Czechoslovakia. In Gablonz she attended the Schule für Bildende Kunst, where she also completed her training as a costume jewellery designer.

Hoping for greater scope to develop in the West, she fled to Germany with her husband in the spring of 1969 during the “Prague Spring”. In Stadtallendorf in northern Hesse the couple founded an art foundry, and Jana Pfeifer began by modelling commissioned works — among them the “Goldene Victoria”, which has been awarded annually by Burda Verlag since 2003. Gradually she also created more and more independent works, strongly influenced by themes of mythology and of the inner life. Ever more exhibition participations in Germany and Switzerland followed.

Jana Pfeifer died on 23 January 2020 after a short and serious illness.
